Signs and Characteristics for Autism

If you think have autism, there are a range of symptoms and characteristics for autism that you need to watch out for. Autism symptoms are quite broad and not every child will display the same symptoms, making it a little harder to ascertain than other illnesses. Even so, symptoms and characteristics for autism are already evident in a child around the age of three, or younger, and an earlier diagnosis means better treatment for the child over the long term.

One example might be, autistic children often have difficulty sleeping or remaining asleep. Understanding the needs of a child with autism, including making sure the child gets enough sleep throughout the day instead of insisting on a long prolonged period of sleep, will help keep the child healthy.

Characteristics for Autism are exhibited in three primary areas – atypical behavior not customarily found in healthy children, a lack of communication skills and a general aversion or lack of awareness of the social world around them. The atypical characteristics found within these three categories are measured in comparison to others in that child's peer or age group. If a child has yet to learn to make cohernent sounds or speak when the rest of his age group can already form short but well-formed sentences, there is a possibility that this is one characteristic for autism. So, when seeking out symptoms of autism, always compare the characteristics with other children his age.

Do remember that identifying one autism symptom, or any of the other symptoms of autism, does not definitively diagnose autism in the child,children regardless of how obvious the
comparisons between other children. You will have to find a number of symptoms before you can assume with any validity that the child does have autism. Characteristics for autism that relate to communication are not limited to speaking, but more to the point deals with non-verbal communication as well.

When a child is without the ability to make good eye contact with other people is a tell-tale indicator. Other aspects of autism include resistance to conversation, unawareness of body language in other people, and all kinds of speaking irregularities, like not being able to expand their vocabulary and not understanding humor, sarcasm and irony.

Being unable to communicate influences a child's social
proclivities, and these may be indicatiors of autism as well. These may include refusal to even recognize the refusal to share things, whether material or not, the presence of strangers, and the general inability to make friends. Children with Autism often like to play only on their own, and get obsessed with the things that they play with. This helps develop the savant skills in autistic children, a special talent or expertise in an area or activity that is advanced compared to other children their age.

Behavioral characteristics for autism include the constant repetition of certain mannerisms, selective interests in restricted activities and refusal to acknowledge others, and the propensity to adopt specific, often non-negotiable routines. If these propensities are not met, the child with autism will fequently respond with violence, usually with aggressive communication, temper tantrums, and sometimes even physically harming their own bodies.

The manifestation of some symptoms may not be enough to actually represent autism. In fact, Childhood Disintegrative disorder and Rett's Disoreder may be what is afflicting the child, instead.
